At the heart of the Army Centenary Montage stands the soldier of 2001. He wears Australian camouflage and carries a Steyr rifle, representing the modern Army at the close of its first century. BrandNet commissioned this oil on canvas from renowned defence artist Jeff Isaacs specifically for the montage.
This is the original painting, not a print. It is the artwork that was reproduced in every one of the 2,001 Army Centenary Montages, and it is now being offered for sale from the BrandNet Archives. There is only one, so once it is sold it will not be available again.
Jeff Isaacs also provided artistic advice on the wider project. In the finished montage, his contemporary soldier stands alongside the "ghosts" of earlier generations drawn by Monty Wedd: soldiers of Malaya, Borneo and South Vietnam, the Korean War, both world wars, a First World War Army nursing sister and a dismounted light horseman from the Boer War.
Created for the Australian Army's centenary in 2001, the montage told the story of 100 years of Army service in a single handcrafted work. The project was directed by retired Lieutenant Colonel Charles Reynolds, with lead design by Stephen Rainey, who remains with BrandNet today as Head of Design. The montage was released as a limited edition of 2,001, and 5% of proceeds were pledged to Legacy, with $40,000 presented in 2002.
