Description

British Empire Medal (BEM) GVI Military

Eligibility

The British Empire Medal (BEM) GVI Military is awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the British and Commonwealth armed forces for meritorious military service. It recognises acts of devotion to duty and valuable service during both wartime and peacetime under King George VI’s reign.

Design

The medal features the crowned effigy of King George VI on the obverse, facing left. The reverse displays the royal cypher “GVI” surrounded by the inscription “For God and the Empire” and enclosed in a laurel wreath. The medal is circular and struck in silver. Recipient details are traditionally engraved on the rim. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”.

Ribbon

The ribbon is rose pink with a central pearl grey stripe and narrow pearl grey edges. The colours are symbolic of dignity and honour. A military clasp with laurel spray is added to distinguish military awards from civil ones.

Symbolism

The BEM GVI Military symbolises loyalty, dedication, and commendable service by personnel whose contributions may not involve direct combat but are vital to military operations and discipline. It honours the quiet professionalism and commitment of those who support and strengthen the armed forces.

By doing so, the medals are given proper recognition and are displayed in a neat and organized fashion.

The swing mounting of medals refers to the attachment of a medal to a ribbon that is allowed to hang freely from a brooch, which in turn is affixed to a uniform or clothing. This mounting style was commonly used for medals from the Boer War up to and including World War II, although there are no fixed guidelines or regulations regarding its use.
