For more than two decades, BrandNet has commissioned original artworks to tell Australian military stories. These paintings became the source of limited-edition prints, medallions, collectables and gifts that found their way into thousands of Australian homes. The original paintings themselves were never sold. They have remained in the BrandNet Archives ever since.
Now, for the first time, the originals are being offered to collectors. Unlike the numbered editions that came after it, the original is not one of a limited edition. It is a true one of one. There is only one original, and once it is sold it leaves the BrandNet Archives and will never be available again.
Where The Poppies Grow is the original 2022 painting by Canberra artist Adriana Seserko, created in synthetic polymer paint on Belgian linen for the Poppy Mpressions collection. A sea of red poppies fills the landscape. Beautiful at first glance, the scene carries a deeper meaning: the same ground that once witnessed violence and loss can, with time, become a place of peace, remembrance and renewal. The red field can be read simultaneously as natural beauty, the colour of blood and sacrifice, and the enduring symbol of remembrance. Peace has returned, but memory remains.
This artwork was commissioned by BrandNet in 2022.
Adriana described the poppy as fragile in appearance yet robust in nature. Its translucent petals, long stems and distinctive seed pods gave her a subject of natural beauty, but she deliberately wanted the painting to carry more than decorative appeal, using the poppy as a metaphor for the human cost of war and the responsibility of later generations to remember.
The work is also deeply personal. Adriana’s great-grandfather was 19 when he was captured during the Second World War and taken to a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany, where he died. Her great-grandmother was pregnant and waiting for her husband to return; her grandmother grew up without her father, and that loss became part of the family story passed from one generation to the next. Adriana’s great-grandfather had himself been an artist, so the painting carries another thread: an artist remembering an artist, and creativity continuing through generations despite a life cut short by war. Adriana also wrote an original poem to accompany the work, moving from the apparent tranquillity of a field of poppies to the violence such ground once witnessed, and back to the present where the poppies remain as a living guard of remembrance.
A self-taught Australian artist based in Canberra, Adriana is known for close attention to detail, strong colour and an interest in the natural world. Her painting became the source for limited-edition fine art prints, aluminium artworks, collectable medallions and a much broader Poppy Mpressions lifestyle collection. The original carries her personal family story, the poem and direct provenance to the collection it inspired.
